- This opportunity exists because many Baby Boomers are reaching the typical retirement age, 65, but are continuing to work. We know this opportunity exists because researchers at Northwestern Mutual found that most Boomers are now planning to retire at 68 years old. However, another study conducted by CEO Robert Johnson stated that he doesn't believe this group of people will retire until they have reached 70 years of age.
- The prototypical customers here are Baby Boomers, those who were born between the years 1946 and 1964. However, it would be difficult to get through to them and exploit this opportunity because, as the saying goes, "you can't teach an old dog new tricks".
- I see this as an opportunity because I think Baby Boomers have experienced so much in life and it is time they take a break. My grandparents all retired very early, unlike many of their friends, and got to spend more time watching their grandkids grow up which is something they told me they were always so fortunate to have experienced.
America is Accumulating Debt Due to Low Borrowing Costs
- http://money.cnn.com/2018/02/26/investing/corporate-debt-rising-rates/index.html
- This opportunity exists because the United States is seeking for an intelligent way to cover the debts that they already owe to large countries like China. We know this opportunity exists because we see firsthand the amount of money that the United States is borrowing and we are aware that, at some point, we must pay it back. The United States is trying to outsmart the international economy and it will either yield a high reward or a massive deficit.
- The prototypical customers here are international countries that are willing to loan money to the United States. These countries must know that they are risking a lot here and it is not a guarantee that the United States will be able to pay back this loan quickly. Therefore, I believe it will be a difficult feat to accomplish.
- I see this as an opportunity because anything is possible in international politics with a little sweettalking. I am a political science major and know how international business is handled so I saw this opportunity where most other business students would not.
Washington's New Minimum Wage Law
- https://www.littler.com/publication-press/publication/new-minimum-wage-and-paid-sick-leave-laws-washington-employers
- This opportunity exists because workers in the Washington area were being abused and not given enough credit for the hard work they put into their demanding jobs. We know this opportunity exists because the state of Washington came up for a plan to slowly increase the state's minimum wage each year until it eventually reached the ideal level that state officials demanded it be.
- The prototypical customers here are workers with fairly few skills who work at fast food restaurants, department stores, or any other place where they receive minimum wage for their duties. This will be hard to implement because all employers will have to find a way to properly compensate their employees and they might not have the funds available. This will result in many reduced hours for numerous workers and even some layoffs.
- I see this as an opportunity because it will allow workers to have a more stable income and provide them with benefits they were not receiving before. Furthermore, I work at a minimum wage job where I only receive $8.10 for my services, which is the minimum pay in Florida, and I know that that is not nearly enough to provide basic living necessities for myself, much less my family.
Small Businesses Get Tax Deductions
- https://www.businessnewsdaily.com/10357-small-business-tax-reform-changes.html
- This opportunity exists because America thrives off of small businesses. After all, the American dream is to come to this country with nothing and work your way up to the top financially with a small business proposal that turns into the next large corporation. We know this opportunity exists and it is evident as shown by the statistic that pass-through companies will now receive a 20% deduction in their taxes.
- The prototypical customers in this case are small business owners who need to keep as many of their funds as possible in order to become successful and prominent within their industry. This new legislation should be fairly easy to exploit because business owners, with this additional revenue that they are keeping, can put that money back into the economy by buying more supplies or tools for their companies.
- I see this as an opportunity because small business owners are typically cautious with how they spend their funds. My father owns a small company and I know he is very frugal when it comes to our finances, whether it be choosing a cheap restaurant for dinner or forsaking our family vacation in order to keep the small funds he has left so that he can put it back into the business. This is why I see this opportunity as profitable whereas many others without my background would fail to view it in the same light as I do.
Iara,
ReplyDeleteGreat post. I really liked the Washington minimum wage law opportunity. The argument normally made in this instance would be an economic one. If the wages went up there would probably be a commensurate increase in the price of goods and services. But, as someone who has worked a minimum wage job, I can say with confidence that even a dollar helps.
Thanks for your insight.
I found the first story very interesting.
ReplyDeleteThe old-age idea "Retirement" is gone now. New generations seek opportunities in the job market but face obstacles due to competitions caused by baby boomers not retiring. However, there's another way to look into this matter. As the average life expectancy for the US reaching near 80, baby boomers want to make sure they are well-prepared for later in their lives. It's a natural phenomenon. What we, new generations, can do to secure job security is develop new-age technical skills and intelligence that can't be replaceable.
Great post. I also chose an opportunity that was about baby boomers not retiring. I think its an opportunity because there is an influx of older people within the workforce. I think this can be a problem for those already looking for work because it is additional competition. However I think it can be beneficial for senior employees and certain companies that are looking for part time workers.
