Venezuelans Fleeing to Palm Beach County
- http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/16C2F54920842478?p=WORLDNEWS
- In this article, published on May 28th, 2018, the author begins by sharing the narrative of the Martinez family. Arnaldo Martinez, along with his wife and children, escaped from a life of poverty and uncertainty in Venezuela in 2015 and formed their new life in Palm Beach. Although the family does not have an established history in the area, they are hardworking and eager to adapt to the American culture around them.
- There are many issues that are brought to light in this article. The first of these issues is the fact that the Venezuelan government is not properly taking care of its citizens, leaving them with no choice but to evacuate their home country and head elsewhere in order to feed themselves and receive appropriate shelter. Furthermore, once these immigrants flee to their new countries, many of them arrive with little to no money and there are many cultural differences that they have to adapt to. A lot of these immigrants were once established professionals in their country but now have to restart their careers at 30, 40, and even 50 years old.
- The people who have this problem are the immigrants and the people living in Palm Beach as well as the government of Palm Beach County because they have to figure out how to adapt to this influx of immigrants.
Alberto Stronger, Eyes Panhandle
- http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/16C2F5493ADE8E80?p=WORLDNEWS
- This article, written on May 28th, 2018, discusses the growing tropical storm that was given the name Alberto. What is so special about this storm is that it arrives right before the official start of hurricane season, which is typically from June until November. Also, the storm gains momentum during an important holiday weekend, Memorial Day Weekend, resulting in events within the Palm Beach area to be shortened or cancelled altogether. While the worst of the storm has already passed South Florida, the Panhandle is next and the people of North Florida are encouraged to prepare adequately.
- The problem in this article is the fact that hurricanes tend to halt daily life and provide complications for civilians in the affected areas. Many roads are flooded after heavy rain caused by tropical storms and hurricanes resulting in areas being closed off and access to important places like supermarkets becoming impossible. In addition to this, the fact that this tropical storm began so early could mean a global warming problem resulting in a prolonged hurricane season.
- The people affected by this issue are the people of Florida, especially the Panhandle where the storm seems to be the worst, and Palm Beach county since they have to figure out a way to maneuver around flooded roads and fix these issues once the storm ends.
$1M Donation Paves Way to Affordable Housing
- http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/16C2F54927F5D7D8?p=WORLDNEWS
- This article was written on May 28th, 2018 and discusses an innovative solution to a prominent problem within the Palm Beach area. An anonymous donor decided to give money to allow for the creation of new homes in Palm Beach which would be cheap and serve the desperate need of affordable housing in the community. The donation was given to ensure that no family would have to sleep in their car because they could not afford to put a roof over their child's head. This shows the strength and unity of the Palm Beach community and demonstrates their commitment to social justice and giving back to their hometown.
- The problem mentioned in this article is the lack of affordable housing in the Palm Beach area. The author of the article mentions that many families live in their cars or on the streets because they cannot pay the high prices of Palm Beach real estate. However, now, with these new houses, rent will be between $400-$600 a month. Another issue that arises with this is the debate over which families will be allowed to move in to these new apartments.
- The people affected by this problem are those who could not afford housing in the Palm Beach area, those who are building the new housing complex, the people who decide which families can live in the affordable housing community, and the people of Palm Beach who are going to be receiving new, happy neighbors once the project is complete.
Confront Bullying in Schools, Not Just Access to Guns
- http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/16C1B9A584D8A190?p=WORLDNEWS
- Written on May 24th, 2018, this article discusses a very controversial topic that is currently being highly debated all across America, gun control versus mental health. A middle aged teacher is attempting to convince schools that bullying has become a serious problem and that mass shootings are linked to unhappy children whose mental health was affected as a direct result of being bullied. He is reminding the Palm Beach community that mental health is something that should not be taken lightly and he even argues that preventing bullying might be more important than preventing guns. The author mentions how middle and high school shape a child for the rest of their lives and if they are bullied, they are more likely to remember those unfortunate circumstances and be affected negatively for the remainder of their life times.
- In this article, the main problem is the fact that Americans take mental health and bullying less seriously than they should. Moreover, the bigger picture problem is gun violence in schools as seen by the numerous mass school shootings just within the past academic year. This article is linking the two problems together and stating that they are correlated and that eliminating one will ultimately get rid of the other issue as well.
- The people affected by this issue are victims of bullying, teachers who have to deal with bullying and mass shootings, victims of mass shootings, and the public school system of Palm Beach since they have to decide how to decrease bullying in their locations in order to decrease gun violence in their schools.
Gas Costs Up, With Palm Beach on Top
- http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/16B7C1F685667628?p=WORLDNEWS
- This article, written on April 24th, 2018, discusses an issue that Americans deal with far too often, fluctuating gas prices. Over the past five years, gas prices have reached fairly low prices but in the past few months, these prices have been soaring to new heights. Many Americans are wondering what caused the steep increase in prices and the answer is fairly simple: the supply of international oil is running out faster than expected. Because of the quickly decreasing supply but the constant, if not growing demand, oil companies are charging more and more every day for their gas prices knowing that their customers will continue to buy it simply because they must and have no easily accessible alternatives.
- The first issue that needs to be discussed regarding this article is the fact that gas prices are becoming so high, with Palm Beach county having some of the highest priced gas, that if they continue increasing, gas might become a luxury that not too many people will be able to afford. Looking at the bigger picture, the world's oil supply will, at some point, exhaust itself and then people all over the world will be unsure of what to do or how to transport themselves from place to place.
- The people affected by this issue are the drivers of Palm Beach, who are paying very high gas prices compared to the rest of the country, but more than that, every driver in America will be affected by this issue if something is not done to decrease the prices of gasoline. Also, oil companies are causing these changes by increasing their prices so they too are being affected but in a more positive manner financially.
Iara,
ReplyDeleteYou found some really interesting articles. The one that resonated with me the most was the one about the Venezuelan immigrants. I personally know some people who fell victim to the same type of treatment. One of my friend's parents was a cardiologist and was forced out, now he can't practice medicine because he lives in Miami. There is plenty of opportunity here.
Thanks!
I enjoyed reading your articles and gained new insights about our society, especially the first one about venezuelans fleeing to palm beach area.
ReplyDeleteWith Venezuela's communism-driven administration disrupting the currency leading to hyper-inflation, many citizens of venezuelans shift their eyes to the otherside of the world and start new life. It was interesting to read!
Iara, you found some interesting article from my area of Florida. The article on Venezuelan Immigrants was particularly interesting. I have seen first hand the impact Venezuelan policies have had on a family I taught recently. Secondly, the article on bullying and mental health's role in the school shootings hits home for me. While I do not teach in a public school, the national, state, and local decisions all have an impact on my daily life. There certainly is an opportunity to solve problems in both of those cases and I liked how detailed your descriptions were in all of your articles.
